Knotty Enigmas is a collection of drawings and soft sculptures that reflect the body’s gut response to trauma. This series of “memory-knots” pulls from the artist’s own relationship with cell memory, and has been informed by a level of her own introception (a sense of the internal state of the body). These dark, heavy, interwoven forms aim to articulate the ways in which trauma is held and carried in the body as a weighted, somatic experience, and how this accumulates over time. The drawings are built up in layers of graphite which reflect the ways in which complex trauma is cumulative and therefore ever-evolving, as new and recurring traumas continue to pile up and go unprocessed, and past memories are triggered and re-intensified. The soft sculptures bring these notions further into a bodily realm through their overwhelming, colossal sense, and through the tangible weight they visibly carry. While certain “knotty enigmas” are non-infinite, others are infinite loops which pose an added complexity should they be attempted to be unraveled. Through these ambiguities and abstractions, these enigmas further challenge both the artist and the viewer to find their way through these knots, and to confront what arises in the process.
